Descriptions

Baby

What looks like a hunk of layered crystal seems more like it's actually made of ice—it's cold to the touch. It pulsates on occasion, causing small fragments to fall off. No water ever pools underneath when it's kept at room temperature.

Juvenile

It seems that this creature is either completely or mostly blind, as it mainly reacts to sounds. The long feelers on its head are its primary way of interacting with its surroundings. Random objects that happen to catch its interest will be carried around for hours, sometimes days. There doesn't seem to much it won't readily eat in regards to sustenance. The large pillars of ice growing on its back keep the air cool around it at all times. Warmer temperatures don't perturb the creature in the slightest.

Adult

The Diamondeye Quartzback lives deep within caves, causing light layers of frost to consistently form around wherever they choose to nest. Their vision may be poor, but their hearing is excellent. Normally they are quite docile, but if they sense danger they won't hesitate to defend themselves by attempting to freeze their assailant solid. Making loud noises or attempting to sneak up on one is the surest way to get attacked. The safest way to navigate around one is quietly and far away from it, but if it can't be avoided then it is best to appear as indifferent to its presence as possible. Despite being adapted to the pitch black environment of underground, they fare quite well outside in the sunlight.

Their feelers are their best way of interacting with their surroundings, so if one happens to brush its feelers against someone or something then it likely doesn't feel threatened by whatever it is that's being observed. While they are sensitive to sound and can be easily spooked by unfamiliar ones, it quickly learns the source of sounds it regularly encounters. They are very easy to teach verbal commands to, with some individuals being capable enough to complete more complex tasks such as being told to retrieve a specific item from somewhere it is familiar with.
